Make It Focal Point
Whether you have a simple brick fireplace or a dramatic floor-to-ceiling stone style, a fireplace has an architectural presence that demands attention, so it only makes sense to use it as the focal point of your living room. Start by arranging your furniture around the fireplace. Typically, you should place your largest seating piece, the sofa, opposite the fireplace and arrange smaller pieces like your love seat and arm chairs perpendicular to it. Depending on your living room’s layout, however, you may want to place both your sofa and smaller pieces perpendicular to the fireplace on each side and leave the area opposite it empty for more effective traffic flow. To further call attention to your fireplace, consider painting the wall around it in a shade that contrasts with the rest of the room to really draw the eye.
